Spare nothing

Philip Stein held nothing back when creating its Modern 9-CRBS men’s watch. Starting with a super sized watch face, this time piece combines numerous features with innovative technology and visual elements that demand to be appreciated. Put it all together and you have a masterpiece of wrist watches that will not be outdone for decades, if ever.

The round, stainless steel, oversized case is nearly two inches in diameter. Under the full sapphire crystal that covers the watch face, there are two main dials to keep track of two different time zones. Within the top main dial there are three sub-dials – one for 24-hour time, one for minutes, and a chronograph stopwatch. There is also a date window at six o’clock. On this top dial, there the space is maximized by using different elements as hour markers. The date window, as mentioned, is six o’clock. Three, nine and noon are marked by Arabic numerals, ten and two are the edges of sub-dials and 11, 1, 4, 5, 7 and eight are denoted by white dots. Earthy futuristic

Philip Stein brings one of its characteristically futuristic watches down out of the clouds a little bit with some earth tone accenting on its Signature 3-T-CRCS men’s watch. Race or fly?

The Philip Stein Signature Sport Chronograph 5-CF-CRWS-NRB is perhaps the busiest men’s watch ever. I can’t decide whether it is more evocative of NASCAR or jet planes. It has the checkers of a finish line, the circular gauges of a dashboard and the knobs, instrumentation and materials of an aircraft.

The oblong watch case is carbon fiber and black rubber and the strap is black rubber, making the Signature Sport Chronograph 5-CF-CRWS-NRB men’s watch one of Philip Stein’s most sporty. The watch face, protected by a sapphire coated curved mineral crystal, includes two white main dials on a black and grey checkered background and three black sub dials within the top main dial, plus a date window at 4 o’clock. The sub dials measure military time, minutes and seconds. There are a total of four knobs to control the dials, making the side of the watch about as busy as the inside. In addition to black, white, grey and gunmetal colors, there are red accents  on the second hands, sub dial rims and at 12, 3, 6 and 9. The watch has Swiss quartz movement and it is 15 ATM water resistant.

The Philip Stein Collections Signature 1DD-T-NM101 combines glamour with playful styling.

There’s no doubt that this Philip Stein Collections Signature Small Stainless Steel Case with Full-Cut Diamonds would be a lovely addition to any women’s wrist.  But perhaps all those feel good vibes that make you playful.  Because this watch, glamorous as it is, can’t help but wink a bit at its clever styling.

To start with there’s the face – as delicate as a snowflake.  The Nouveau Diamond Dial has scattered diamond markers that give the impression of being truly scattered and then ever so artfully rearranged with a few left loose for even greater effect.  Even more diamonds adorn the bezel for a total of 1.20 carat total weight.  A wavy, fretwork design on the crystal separates the two dials while an Arabic one o’clock and Roman seven o’clock on the lower dial is yet another example of the design juxtapositions that Philip Stein does so well.

Like all the watches in the Philip Stein’s Prestige collection, the 12LW men’s watch is replete with features and flair that must make other watch designers pea green with envy. It has the subtlety of pastel in its background, splashes of color in the foreground, earth tone versatility on the straps, engineering creativity in its dial and calendar configuration, and a whole that is more than the sum.

The color scheme of the Prestige 12LW dial face consists of a white background with stripes in a light bluish gray gradient, silver gray numerals and hands, and splashes of forest green in the form of the second hands and some numbers. The primary strap is what Philip Stein calls Trieste green, which is kind of a light pea green. It has two time zone dials, the top dial has the calendar, which includes rotating numbers suppressed under the minute markers; except for the correct date, which shows up clearly in a window at 6 o’clock. The face is covered by a double curved sapphire crystal window with an anti-gloss coating. The men’s watch, which is 5 ATM water resistant, has 1 Ronda movement. The case is stainless steel, with two small sapphire windows on the back.
